Strasburg, a town of 7,000 located in Shenandoah County, Virginia, is an eclectic stop for travelers seeking a break from the traffic on Interstate 81.
Founded in 1761 by Germanic immigrants, Strasburg has been home to a variety of industries, including printing and stoneware. The town, like many, has had to reinvent itself as industry has come and gone, and now boasts an impressive collection of public art in its historic downtown. Staufferstadt Arts, a local nonprofit, has led a campaign to install murals on downtown buildings, aiming to revitalize the town through art and culture. The murals were painted by nationally known street artists, including Gilf!, Alice Mizrachi, NDA, and Over Under.
Strasburg is worth a visit. Its charming downtown is small, and makes it a perfect spot to refresh the tired and bored interstate traveler.
New Star Market, situated on the opposite side of Interstate 81, is a quirky spot to refuel, grab a cup of coffee, and stock up on essentials. The store and its coffee shop, The Porch, are unique, featuring an odd array of artwork and kitsch that entertains visitors. A little library and comfortable furniture encourage visitors to sit and relax.
